We’re all used to constantly moving, but sometimes it’s necessary to sit back and take care of yourself. Since we’re already on our phones 24/7, we might as well use them for something that improves our mental and emotional health. Whether you’re traveling or sitting at home, these five apps make self-care easy and convenient.

Shine

The Shine app was created by two women of color, Marah Lidey and Naomi Hirabayashi. The app is meant to make wellness more accessible for millenials.

It offers inclusive meditations specific to your struggles, personalized affirmations and self-care programs, gratitude journaling, a daily prompt, and a diverse community where you can participate in supportive discussion.

Insight Timer

Insight Timer is one of my favorite apps because you can get a lot out of it at no cost. There are tons of free guided and unguided meditations to choose from. Whether you need a quick meditation break, relaxing music to fall asleep to, or want to dedicate 20 minutes to your practice, Insight Timer has those options. Plus, whenever you open the app you get a nice quote to reflect on.

Headspace

Headspace is one of the more well-known meditation apps. It’s great for people who are new to meditation because it simply and clearly breaks down the practice and allows you to track your progress with a new meditation every day. You can get a free trial, but after that it’s $12.99 a month or $69.99 a year.

Flora

We’ve all been in the situation where our dinner partner has their eyes glued to their phone and is completely disconnected from their surroundings. This app is perfect for those people.

The purpose of the free app, Flora, is to encourage you to put away your phone and focus on other things like studying or just living life. The app allows you to set phone-free times. The more you adhere to your own rules, the more your virtual tree grows within the app. You can grow your tree alone or invite friends to join you in putting their phones away.

Core

More on the pricey side, it’s recommended to use the Core app with the purchase of a Core device at $169. You use this device during meditation, holding it to help ground yourself. It vibrates, creating a sensory experience and measuring your body’s response to stress. You have the option of purchasing a subscription which gives you access to more meditations, but you can also just use the free library of meditations that come with the app.
